I started shooting film back in 2002. That's how I learned photography, that's what I knew. Then these silly and expensive "digital" cameras came on the market. It was convenient, fast, and easy to see what you shot right away. Everyone wanted digital, so that's what I shot. I always kept the film for my personal and fun photography. The weddings and portraits were doing great but it just felt like something was missing. That was when I decided to start bringing some film to our shoots. It wasn't long until I found that missing piece.
The look
There is just something different that cannot be easily replicated with a digital camera. Film is tangible. The tones are unique and there is a lot of detail in the highlights and shadows. But more than that, when we shoot with film, we shoot with intention. We don't over-pose our clients we set up the shot to let natural moments unfold.
the feel
Shooting film is completely in line with our print philosophy. The end result in photography has always been the print. Analog photography is no different. Yeah, you can scan the film, but nothing beats the magic of seeing your darkroom print come to life under that red light! To me, that's way more satisfying than copying digital files to a hard drive. There is a much deeper connection to your images when you can physically hold them in your hands.
As with film, there are plenty of options of paper to choose from. Each has a different look and feel to it. It's our job to pair the right film with the right paper for each session.
the experience
If you have ever had your photos taken with another photographer, they most likely shot with a digital camera. Having your photos shot on film is a very different experience.
First off, we will meet at our studio to talk about the session, take a look at our products and paper types, and see what you are drawn to. The film we use, how we develop it and which camera we use, are all factors that we need to discuss in order to get the look you're after. We will also talk about locations to shoot, clothes to wear, and the relationships between you and your family.
The session itself is usually shot on location and we are pretty relaxed. We are more focused on documenting real emotions instead of standard looking at the camera shots. With film, you really need to know what you're doing. You don't get to see what you shot right away. It's just like Christmas time waiting for your pictures to be developed to see the photo.
A couple weeks later, we'll meet at the studio to view your photos. We'll pick your favorites for your wall or album. Then schedule the pick up or delivery of your final products.
